Feng Luo was in a hotel room. His eyes seemed to have lost focus. But actually, his vision was following the Scout Beetle, tailing a medical vehicle that was speeding towards the sanitorium owned by the Umbrella Corporation.
The psionics index of 24K was depleting quickly. The rate of consumption depended on the distance between the Scout Beetle and the King Beetle; the further it was, the faster the depletion.
On top of that, the maximum scouting distance of a Level-20 Scout Beetle was within 1,000 meters. Luckily, he was situated not too far from the sanitarium. The displacement from it was about 600 meters.
Feng Luo wasn’t unfamiliar with the sanitarium. He had been exploring most of the sanitarium with the help of the beetle for the past three days. However, he hadn’t found the exact location of the secret base. This was mainly due to the exhaustion of the psionics index. He didn’t have much time to inspect the place each time.
Right now, this was certainly a golden opportunity.
A minute or so later, the Umbrella Corporation’s medical vehicle entered the main gate of the sanitarium, heading toward the subsidiary hospital in the sanitarium. However, halfway through the journey, the lead researcher got down from the vehicle.
Feng Luo hesitated, then decided to let the Scout Beetle follow him. After all, entering the hospital wasn’t a hard task, but going after this man might lead him to their secret base.
However, rather than Feng Luo’s expectation, this man who looked like the head of the researchers did not enter the secret base immediately as he thought he would. Instead, he walked for a few seconds to the edge of the forest, heading towards a wooden cabin that featured a majestic view.
In the middle of the cabin, a man wearing a pair of sunglasses and dressed in a black leather trench coat sat on a chair, communicating with someone via the virtual screen of a communicator. His call ended just as the head of researchers arrived, and the screen was switched off. But, through the Scout Beetle, Feng Luo managed to get a quick peek of the person from the other end just before it was switched off.
Feng Luo was astounded by what he saw.
“Roaring Dragon ‘Lightwind’?”
Feng Luo was startled. He would never have expected to see his all-time rival here.
Roaring Dragon ‘Lightwind’ is associated with the Umbrella Corporation? Is it just him alone or the entire Roaring Dragon Mercenary Group?
Thoughts flashed through Feng Luo’s mind. However, his attention was pulled back when the lead researcher addressed the man in the leather trench coat and sunglasses.
“Mr. Wesker!” the head researcher in a lab coat said, respectfully greeting the man in the sunglasses.
Wesker?
The name made Feng Luo’s heart stagger.
Wesker was one of the most important characters in the Umbrella Corporation from Biohazard. In the movie version, he was the biggest villain after the supercomputer known as “Red Queen.”
Why would such an important character be here? Not to mention that he had just seen Roaring Dragon ‘Lightwind’. This mission was getting more and more complicated.
“What’s the status?” Wesker said without any emotion.
“Four groups have already completed the test,” the head researcher reported. “According to the data, their combat power have basically met our expectations. However, Sample Number 5 was killed by a kind of powerful sniper rifle. We suspect that some tourists may have been carrying highly lethal weapons. Nonetheless, it could also be armed personnel from the FBI.”
Weapons weren’t prohibited in many places in War, hence many NPCs were armed—not to mention the players. Having said that, Roguetown was one of the weapons-free zones.
Feng Luo was shocked by the lead researcher’s words. To his surprise, the Umbrella Corporation already knew about the intervention of the FBI. If that was the case, wouldn’t they be exposed easily from now on?
“The FBI?” Wesker asked coldly. But what he said next was beyond what was expected. “Great. I was worried about the experiment tomorrow night. If we only relied on ordinary guard soldiers, it will not show the real power of my masterpiece. Now we even have some ‘bugs’ with combat power…
“Sir, what do you mean?”
The lead researcher was uncertain about it.
“We don’t have to bother about them as long as they do not attempt to enter the sanitarium. Also, we don’t even have to waste our time to find them, as tomorrow night, they will all come crawling out. Till then, they will be smashed.”
Wesker said frigidly.
“Yes sir!”
The researcher nodded. Just then, the mini communicator on his ear buzzed.
“Is there a problem, Director Locke?”
The lead researcher asked with a light tone.
“What the hell are you guys doing? Why are there so many disgusting dogs in the town all of a sudden? So far there has been 20 over casualties! Those including 13 tourists, seven residents and five guard soldiers! Do you know what this means?”
The obese guard director’s roar transmitted through the communicator.
“My apologies. There was an accident today, a few of our subjects have escaped!”
The lead researcher replied calmly.
“Accident? Do you know what are the consequences of this accident? Roguetown’s tourism is screwed! I AM SCREWED!”
The obese director was now shouting.
“No, Director Locke, this is just a small matter, it isn’t as bad as you think. How about this, you just help to cover up this incident, we have already sent our men to deal with it.”
“Cover it up? And how am I supposed to do that? Even three of my people have been killed. Harley that old b*astard has been suspicious of my motives. You know he is well respected among the guards!”
The obese director yelled.
“50 million credits!”
“Director Locke, I suppose 50 million is enough for your service this time? Besides, it wasn’t your fault for what happened today, so your future will not be affected. Even if it did, and you have fled to the rebel army’s territory, the money we are giving you plus those you have gotten previously are more than enough for you to splurge for a lifetime.”
The lead researcher remained composed.
“50 million?”
The obese director’s voice turned into a squeak; he repeated hesitantly for confirmation.
“That’s right, 50 million! All converted to Energy Crystals, depreciation free guaranteed.”
The lead researcher said emotionlessly.
“O…okay! ”
The obese director sounded like he was gritting his teeth, but still he continued questioning.
“But why was the communication system cut off? If it wasn’t the special communicator you guys gave, I wouldn’t be able to reach my subordinates. This must have been your doings right?”
“Because of such severe mistakes, there will be severe negative impacts on our company’s image if it was exposed. Hence we shut the communication system down temporarily to make time for our crisis management team to minimise the impact…”
The researcher explained.
“Is that so?”
The obese director sounded a bit doubtful.
“I don’t have any reasons to lie to you! Director Locke, just help us to stabilize the situation for now. No worries, we will only need a day to settle everything, and the money will be ready by then too!”
The lead researcher said before hanging up.
“Well done! This man could still proof that he is useful at the very last moment.”
Wesker stood up from the chair, giving his last words as he turned around and left.
The Scout Beetle that was perched on the window started flapping its wings silently and followed behind him.
Wesker walked through a rotating wall and entered a back room. He pressed a button in his hand and the floor in the center of the room slowly slid open, revealing an installation similar to an elevator. Then, he stood directly on it.
The door shut completely. On the surface was just wooden coated, but on the inside of it was actually an electromagnetic door made of superalloy.
“Abnormal air fluctuation detected from scans around you!”
A virtual projection of a girl in white appeared beside Wesker out of the blue, as she looked up to him and reported.
“Huh?”
Wesker with his sunglasses raised an eyebrow.
“Advanced security check activated!”
The little girl said with a childish voice.
Three seconds later, Feng Luo’s vision turned pitched black.
Staring at the message from the system on the death of the Scout Beetle, Feng Luo became lost in his thoughts.
“Little girl? Was it a supercomputer? Red Queen? Or the White Queen?”
