Chapter 38

nPark Junwoo and Kim Yonggun were first to explain.
n“We finished all the test codes for the HTS over the weekend.” They then turned on the computer screen. Scrolling down, they showed Woosung their work. “We’re still not as skilled as you are, but we tried to follow your format as much as possible. The first thing you need to see is…”
nBefore Park Junwoo could finish his sentence, Woosung asked.
n“Wait. Show me the 47th line again. Something’s not right.”
n“H…huh?”
nWhen Park Junwoo scrolled down to the 47th line, Woosung continued.
n“Our HTS allows each user to pick multiple items of interest. This means it works in an array format.”
nPark Junwoo listened carefully. As Woosung continued, he realized his mistake.
n“If you test it like this, it can only be applied to the situation if a user only picked one item. If multiple items of interest were selected, this test wouldn’t work.”
n“I…I see…”
nKim Yonggun groaned. Park Junwoo became speechless while Woosung continued.
n“Could you scroll down a bit more?”
nWas there another mistake? Park Junwoo moved his mouse with a shaking hand.
n“Stop. Right here.”
nPark Junwoo and Kim Yonggun stared at the line Woosung pointed. No matter how hard they looked, they couldn’t figure out what the problem was.
n“As you can see, business logic is being applied to the test code.”
nBusiness logic.
nIt was a part of the program that encoded the real-world business rules. For test codes, such logic should not be involved.
nPark Junwoo tried to make an excuse.
n“W…well, it couldn’t be helped…”
nWoosung replied with a disappointed harshness. “Then why bother making test codes? You didn’t make them just for show, did you?”
nAn intense tension filled the room. Kim Yonggun tried to explain.
n“N…no, of course not. That part was to test the business logic, so I felt that even if it is included, it will still be an acceptable test.”
n“Then if the logic needs to be changed and applied, were you going to adjust both sides?” Woosung countered without a hint of hesitation.
nKim Yonggun remained silent. Park Junwoo’s hands trembled harder than ever. Woosung continued.
n“Please go on with your explanation. The market is going to open soon.”
nIt was now 8:20 am.
nPark Junwoo was a nervous wreck by the time he finished.
n3:00 pm.
nAfter the market closed, it was Yoon Gihwan’s turn to show his work. A similar thing happened where Woosung questioned him several times.
nWoosung didn’t just provide corrections. He gave thorough explanations about his reasonings and gave helpful suggestions. He was kind and thoughtful the whole time.
nAll three felt embarrassed, but the information they gained was priceless. They accepted their submissive positions in earnesty.
nDay after day, all of them worked in the same pattern. Every morning, Woosung checked and corrected the works done the day before. As time passed, Yoon Gihwan, Park Junwoo, Kim Yonggun became more knowledgeable and confident to a point where they could debate with Woosung.
nThen one day.
nWoosung murmured.
n“I think you are all competent enough now that you’ll be able to survive outside Daesan.”
nWoosung meant it as a compliment, but no one seemed happy to hear it. Kim Yonggun looked at Woosung in annoyance.
n“Don’t give us a half-assed compliment. Correct us. We feel better when you are teaching us.”
n“W…well… there is nothing more for me…”
nPark Junwoo added.
n“You need to be hard on us. That’s the only way for us to get better.”
nYoon Gihwan agreed.
n“Be harsh!”
nKnock, knock.
nThe door opened and Kwak Jungwook entered.
n“It’s time for the monthly meeting.”
nFriday 2:50 pm.
n“Let’s get going. It’s time for the meeting.” Kwon Hyungeun stood up and told Nam Kyungsang.
nHowever, he was busy typing. Kwon Hyungeun asked again.
n“Manager Nam, we need to go now.”
nHe still didn’t answer. Kwon Hyungeun was usually a very patient man, but he started this behavior is starting to get in his nerves. He placed his hand on Nam Kyungsang’s shoulder. The man answered without turning around.
n“I’ll be done soon. I’m going to finish this part and go.”
n“What are you working on? Is it so important you’re willing to miss the meeting?”
n“You don’t need to know. I’m almost done.”
nNam Kyungsang still talked without turning around. Kwon Hyungeun started to breathe roughly.
n“Manager Nam. Who is the PM here?”
n“Uh…”
n“I need to know everything about this project. I understand that you are busy, but you can’t behave like this.”
nNam Kyungsang repeated himself. “I’m telling you, don’t worry about it. I’m almost done. Almost.”
nThis wasn’t Kwon Hyungeun’s first day at work. He became suspicious.
n“Manager Nam. Did you…make someone else do your work?”
nSilence.
nSilence meant Kwon Hyungeun was right. He reddened and yelled.
n“Manager Nam!”
nKwon Hyungeun has never raised his voice before. Everyone looked shocked. Nam Kyungsang reddened in embarrassment.
n“It…it’s not like that.”
n“Then what!? Explain yourself!” Kwon Hyungeun accused.
nNam Kyungsang became even more flustered. “I’m almost finished. Please, just…just let it go this once.” He continued to type but his fingers trembled.
n“You…”
n“I’ll explain everything later.”
nNam Kyungsang begged him. They have worked with each other for a long time, so Kwon Hyungeun couldn’t ignore his plea.
n“Fine. Just hurry up. We’ll talk after the meeting.”
nKwon Hyungeun left first. Nam Kyungsang sighed and focused again on his screen. After a few minutes, he finished up his work and connected to an uploading screen.
n“Why is it so hard to upload a program?”
nHe complained and continued to click. After the final step, Nam Kyungsang ran to the conference room.
nOn his screen, a popup showed up titled ‘Nuri Finances Enterprise DevOps System.’
nMonthly meeting.
nIt was something every developer working for Nuri Finances feared. Project PMs especially hated this time.
nOn the screen were the list of topics. Kwak Jungwook began the meeting.
n“We will start with the issues for each system for this month.”
nDaeyang System’s PM was the first to speak.
n“We’ll begin with Daeyang System.”
nThe screen changed to the list of main projects Daeyang was involved in. After his explanation, it was followed by similar presentations by PMs from ST, M3, and Daesan.
nNext was the point system result.
nDaeyang System
nNumber of bugs: 11
nNumber of bugs fixed: 11
nNumber of new function suggestions: 7
nST Data System
nNumber of bugs: 25
nNumber of bugs fixed: 24
nNumber of new function suggestions: 13
nM3 Soft
nNumber of bugs: 7
nNumber of bugs fixed: 6
nNumber of new function suggestions: 2
nDaesan System
nNumber of bugs: 0
nNumber of bugs fixed: 0
nNumber of new function suggestions: 7
n“As you can see, Daesan was the only one with zero bugs. ST had the most number of new function suggestions, but also had the most number of bugs. Daeyang and M3 had similar numbers as last month.”
nzero bugs.
nYoon Gihwan had to fight back his tears. He felt so proud.
n“Now we’ll go over the total reward and penalty points.”
nThe room fell silent again at Kwak Jungwook’s announcement. Kwon Hyungeun rubbed his chin while Kwon Taegyun frowned. The screen changed, and as Kwak Jungwook was about to continue, someone came into the room suddenly.
n“S…sorry.”
n“What’s wrong?”
n“The transactions aren’t going through.”
nKwak Jungwook asked the person hurriedly.
n“What? Why?”
n“I…I don’t know. The system maintenance team is looking into it right now.”
n“What the hell…”
nJo Youngsuk rubbed his forehead and gritted his teeth. Everyone froze.
n
