Chapter 842 - You Are Not Alone
Jason was not sure if he understood everything correctly because Jennifer was struggling to speak without letting him know that she was crying bitterly.
However, from what he was able to understand, the discussion with her father didn't seem to go as well as he previously thought.
If he were to take a rational look at the situation, Jennifer was a halfling between a noble of the Devir race and an extremely unique commoner of the Aeus race.
First of all, even if they belonged to the same race, if a noble married a commoner, they would lose their nobility.
That was something the laws of both races stated which was rather idiotic in Jason's opinion.
However, that was only the beginning of a weird story because both Jennifer's mother and father seemed to have been initially betrothed to someone else.
Because Jennifer's mother was unique in all possible ways, one of the princes of the Aeus race was willing to give up every single right.
He wanted to marry her by hook or crook, which was what was ought to happen.
Yet, instead of accepting the prince, Jennifer's mother aka Jules, fled from the prince, and while she was on the run, she encountered the Lord of Xytra aka Jennifer's father!
Lord Sadon was already married, but neither did he love his wife, nor had he willingly accepted the marriage.
Instead, he had been forced to marry her in order to protect the rest of his family that had been threatened to be killed.
To prevent this, he had reluctantly married the young Duchess, but the moment he encountered Jules, everything changed.
He decided to elope with her, and they spent a few years together.
It was during this time that they met Luna, and in which Jennifer was born.
To their misfortune, their happy days seemed to meet an end when the envoys of the Devir and Aeus race found clues of Jules and Lord Sadon' whereabouts.
When the two were finally found, a war was about to break out.
Jason had no idea what exactly had happened, but from the looks of it, Jennifer's parents decided to hand over the baby to Luna to allow her to grow up into the fine woman she had become.
Lord Sadon was not sure what exactly Luna had planned with the terror act, but it was definitely not something he had expected to occur.
Despite that, he would never accept Jennifer as his daughter because the Devir Jules had married was already fed up the moment he fled.
She had barely held back from killing Lord Sadon's family because she had fallen in love with everything that belonged to the Lord.
Jason considered the Duchess to be some sort of psycho, but in the end, this didn't matter because it was irrelevant.
The most important point was that Jennifer's mother had been turned into nobility, forced to marry the prince without him losing his rights.
Now, both of them were living their own life, forced into a marriage they had never wanted with children they were never supposed to get.
Only Jennifer could be said to be a lovechild, but even the little halfling was disowned by her parents.
Even if she were to meet her mother, what use would it have if she wasn't acknowledged, or couldn't even speak with her mother the way she wanted.
As such her existence was denied by her own blood, and Jason had to try very hard to console her, but it was quite difficult to do so.
Initially, he had assumed that his situation was similar to Jennifer's but that was not the case.
His mother had raised him for a few years before she was killed, while his father hadn't even known about his existence until a few years ago.
And even after he found out about his existence, he didn't try to push him away.
Instead, he had expressed his desire to meet Jason even if it was not possible for him to expose the existence of a halfling of a Primordial race.
This was not possible right now because of many complications, but Celestia Yadras was trying to pave a way for Jason to be accepted even if it was not easy.
Thus, Jason knew that his situation was different from Jennifer's, and all he could do was to stay by her side, embrace her, and give her some much-needed comfort.
He was not sure how much time had passed, but their hug lasted much longer than he expected.
By the time she had finally stopped speaking and crying, the only thing Jason noticed was that she had fallen asleep, right in his arms.
Yet, her grasp on his clothes was still tight, and without using force it would be impossible to get Jennifer off him.
As such, he lifted her up before moving towards the bed, where he attempted to lay her down while gently loosening her grasp.
However, just when he thought that her hands would finally loosen the grasp on his clothes, Jennifer moved.
She clung harder to him, her legs coiling around his waist.
Jason was locked in her embrace as a single tear trickled down her cheeks before she mumbled,
"Please…don't leave me…
"
Jason knew that Jennifer was rambling in her sleep, and she was hurt but he couldn't help but swallow nervously as his thoughts began to riot.
Shaking his head, he tried to keep calm, telling himself that everything was just happening because Jennifer was emotionally disturbed and that she didn't want to be alone.
But…was that really everything?
Yet, even if Jason believed that there was more between them than being just friends, or whatever they were right now, he couldn't take advantage of the situation.
There was no need to be impatient or anything like that.
Instead, rather than focusing on his hormones that were wreaking havoc in his body, it was more important for him that Jennifer felt comfortable and reassured.
This was everything that mattered right now.
Thus, Jason forcefully suppressed his emotions and the desires that erupted from the depths of his conscience. Slowly, he laid down on the bed, doing nothing but staying by Jennifer's side as she continued to cling onto him, fearing that he might leave.
He continued to lightly caress her hair, unsure of what he should think of Jennifer's current state.
Since more than three years had passed in which they were separated, many things had changed.
Jason felt that he was still the same, but the same couldn't be said about Jennifer.
The confident woman he had met earlier had grown much stronger in a physical sense, while her mental state was extremely fragile.
Having been betrayed, abandoned, and disowned by her parents, it was only obvious for her to feel as if her world was breaking apart.
And Jason was not sure if Jennifer would be able to overcome all of it.
At least that was if she were to be alone.
With that in mind, his support became more and more important, but even then Jason couldn't be certain about the outcome.
In the end, Jennifer had to get her act together and understand that no matter how dark the night, the sun always came up in the morning.
Life was not only black and white but sorrow and happiness went hand in hand. You wouldn't feel the importance of happiness without sorrow and vice versa.
One's mindset was the most important to overcome hurdles in order to avoid a mental breakdown.
Thus, Jason could only caress her hair as he whispered,
"You are not alone, don't forget that!
"
