Chapter 48 - Volume 3 Epilogue

n
nThe first school building of the elementary school.
nWhile bathing in the sunlight that shone through the window, I was resting my chin in my hand as I propped my elbow up on my desk.
n“…how did things end up like this?”
nIt didn’t make sense no matter how I thought about it.
nMy underling Wallace was crying to me,
n“Liam, increase my allowance already! Give me anything, please!”
nKurt looked at Wallace in amazement,
n“Well I guess Wallace is the same as usual.”
n“Shut up you! I thought I’d be able to spend my vacation in luxury at Liam’s mansion, but I was put through hell by Serena instead! Asking for a bit more money should be fine at this point!”
nSerena wasn’t at fault for constantly getting mad at him, just looking at Wallace I could tell he was that bad.
nI now understood why as a prince he was called a person who could be considered neither poison nor medicine.
nLess than a nuisance, he was more like an unnecessary piece of luggage you had to carry around.
nIt was a miscalculation for me to take such a luggage as my underling, but the more pressing problem right now was–
n“Darling, where do you want to eat lunch today? Do you want to go to the cafeteria?”
nRosetta, who I initially thought was a woman of steel was actually a heroine.
nI was disappointed with how easily her cheeks flushed at the sight of me.
nHowever, I realised that it’d be too troublesome to abandon her now.
nIf she betrayed me, I’d show her no mercy, but until then… well, I guess I could take care of her.
n“I feel like buying bread from the school store today.”
n“Bread? Leave it to me, I’ll buy the most popular brand of bread for you.”
nWho told her to buy bread?
nIn the first place, was it really okay to have a young noble lady act as a bread shuttle?
n“Don’t worry about it, Wallace will buy them.”
nWhen I said that, Wallace flipped the blue hair he was so proud of,
n“It’s hopeless. Don’t you know how crazy the crowds get during lunch? It’s impossible for me to get the popular bread.”
nFor the former prince to confidently declare that he couldn’t even buy bread was a disappointing sight.
nKurt turned a frosty look towards him,
n“You really are useless, Wallace.”
n“Well what else am I supposed to say? Besides, don’t you think Liam is the weird one for making former royalty act as a bread shuttle?”
nI repeated my order,
n“Wallace, buy us bread.”
n“Liam, give me a break here. The battle for bread during lunch time is too ruthless for me.”
nHe was lying straight to my face,
n“You’re lying. When I went it wasn’t crowded at all.”
nEveryone lined up and bought their food in an orderly fashion.
nA true reminder that this school was specifically built for the nobility.
nBut Kurt shook his head,
n“That’s only because you were there, Liam.”
nHe started saying something incomprehensible.
nIn anycase, Rosetta looked troubled, so I decided to give up on the bread,
n“Forget it, let’s just eat at the cafeteria.”
n“The cafeteria. Leave it to me, I’ll make sure to secure us the best seats!”
nLike I said, why are you acting like a maid, volunteering to do all these errands?
nIt was kind of fun watching her do so, but I wasn’t pleased with how happily she was willing to take the initiative.
n“Securing us seats is fine, but you don’t need to declare it so loudly.”
n“O-of course. Yes, you’re absolutely right…”
nLooking at Rosetta, you’d think I did something bad to her.
n
n
nWallace called out to me,
n“Liam, I want to have dessert too.”
n“You can just drink water.”
nWasn’t this different from the school life I thought I’d have?
n◇ ◇ ◇
nThe imperial capital.
nThere, the prime minister had gathered multiple officials.
nAssembled here were those who had been assigned to monitor the Claudia house for millenia.
nThese people had always kept the Claudia house under watch from generation to generation, and were now making frustrated expressions.
nThe prime minister was smiling,
n“Thank you so much for the loyal work you’ve done so far. We’ll now prepare new stations for you.”
nBut they didn’t seem satisfied with that,
n“Minister! I can’t accept changing things now, please give us the order to monitor the Banfield house!”
n“Yes! We must keep the orders of his late Majesty alive!”
n“Let’s make sure to keep Count Banfield under supervision!”
nIf they were deprived of the work they’ve done for many years and suddenly asked to do something new, of course they’d be troubled.
nHe completely understood their feelings,
n“I see. Then let’s have all of you die here.”
n“…prime minister?”
nPresented to them on the desk were the weaknesses of the nobles they collected over their many years of service.
nAfter receiving his congratulations for Liam’s engagement, Brian submitted all the materials gathered to the prime minister.
nThere was no reason not to use useable information.
nThis was his chance to dispose of all the undesirable officials at once.
n“…it seems you’ve been sticking you’re noses in a lot of places you weren’t supposed to. I didn’t think you’d even be investigating myself.”
nAs such, the prime minister started his own investigations.
nLooking into them, they were a talentless group only good at torture.
nFor the prime minister, there was no need for dogs that bit their owner’s hands.
n“Th-this is–”
n“No excuses are necessary. I can finally sleep with peace of mind once you’re dead, and for that reason alone, we’re having you disappear.”
nAs the officials got ready to resist– Tia, who was on standy, pulled out her sword.
nIt was a rapier– a weapon that specialised in piercing attacks, accurately impaling the officials in all their vitals spots.
nThe officials fell. The prime minister applauded Tia,
n“What great skill. You will undoubtedly bring great results in the military academy.”
nTia wiped the blood off the blade, looking down at the bodies as she returned it to her sheath.
n“Work of this degree is of no problem. I’d like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to dispose of the officials hostile to Lord Liam.”
nThese people had tried to lure Liam into a trap.
nFor Tia, they were her enemies.
nWhile looking at her, the prime minister asked,
n“Are you enrolling in the military academy soon?”
nTia softly answered,
n“Yes, I plan to enter by next year.”
nAs the prime minister watched his subordinates clean up the corpses, he asked,
n“So what are the Count’s future plans?”
nAs he was currently in his fourth year of elementary school, it wasn’t long until he graduated.
nIn less than three years, Liam had to decide if he was going to go to either the university or the military academy.
nWhich was he going to choose– the prime minister was curious.
nTia replied,
n“Lord Liam has decided to give priority to the academy.”
n“In that case, he’ll be finishing his training in the university? I wonder if the upcoming battle will be over by then.”
nWill the war with the Berkley family end before Liam successfully completes his training?
nThe prime minister was concerned about this.
nTia responded with absolute belief in Liam.
n“Who knows? We might dispose of them sooner than you think.”
n◇ ◇ ◇
nTia left the room and returned to her work– furrowing her brows.
nShe quickly stepped down the hallway while venting her frustrations and complaints,
n“What the hell is a name like ‘Mad Dog Marie’? To leave so many of Lord Liam’s enemies alive, she’s nothing but a cur with the appearance of a faithful mutt.”
n
n
nShe started remembering that eyesore Marie.
nIt was during the engagement ceremony.
nFor her contributions in renovating Avid, Liam had prepared for her the position of deputy, while Tia herself was assigned as the head knight.
n–everything was fine until there.
nBut then she remembered what happened later that day.
n◇ ◇ ◇
n–The day of the engagement ceremony.
nAfter everything was finished, the knights were happily drinking in celebration.
nAt the seat the head knight Tia was sitting at, Marie had approached,
n“So you’re Christiana?”
nWith those words, the air seemed to freeze.
nIn the now silent banquet hall, Tia continued drinking her beverage as she observed Marie.
n“What does the mangy dog want with me?”
nMarie instantly drew her sword and pressed the blade against Tia’s throat.
nBut conversely, Tia’s rapier was already pointed towards her chest.
nAn eerie smile rose up on Marie’s face,
n“It’ll only be for a short while, so you better enjoy your status as the head knight. For that position is supposed to be mine.”
nThey withdrew their blades.
nTia’s gaze was frosty,
n“You’re too slow for the position of deputy. You’re age is getting to you, or would it be more apt to describe you as a crusty old fossil?”
nTia laughed at Marie’s former petrification.
nTo her provocation, Marie answered in a dark tone,
n“You little bitch– I could take your neck right now if I wanted to.”
nSparks were flying between the two.
nSome of the knights were trembling in fear, while others were thinking about how they could kick the two of them down to take their spots.
nThere were even a few knights who didn’t seem interested at all.
nUnlike when Liam had first inherited the territory, there were many knights gathered there.
nSome of them had come because they wanted to serve Liam, while others pledged their loyalty in thanks for the help he’s given them.
nA lot of knights had high expectations for the Banfield house, which had recently rose to power.
nThere were many who wanted to join the new up-starts.
nHowever, considering his position of a Count, the number of knights gathered was still insufficient.
nMore were sure to converge there in the future– but whether they’d be able to work together was another matter.
nLiam’s order of knights were still in a state of assembling themselves.
nSince they were only held together by their high loyalty, many problems had arisen.
nAbove all else, there wasn’t anyone there who could rally together such powerful individuals.
nTia and Marie were potential candidates, but neither of them was willing to cooperate with the other.
n“You mangy mutt, Lord Liam doesn’t need someone like you. I’ll put you down.”
nWhen Tia said so, Marie replied,
n“A minced-meat bitch like you is unnecessary for Lord Liam’s ambitions. I’ll prove it so.”
nThey recognised each other as nothing but enemies.
n◇ ◇ ◇
nThe first building of the elementary school.
n“Twelve Knights of the Round Table– isn’t that cool?”
nIt was Wallace who said such a thing.
nKurt turned to him with cold eyes.
n“There you go again. What did you come up with this time, Wallace?”
n“No, you see, it’s a title bestowed to select knights of particular talent. I read about it in a book from the inner palace, don’t you think that’s cool?”
n“Isn’t that from some comic?”
nApparently such a knight group was from a comic series.
nTwelve capable knights of talent and strength.
nThe king bestowed the title on the knights, giving them privileges and status.
nWe were talking about this behind the school building.
n“It’d be troublesome finding twelve individuals that fit the criteria.”
nKurt followed up on my comment,
n“Liam, don’t take him seriously. Wallace’s idea is mostly based off of fiction, and in the first place, it should be easy for you to find twelve of such people.”
n“Huh?”
n“No, just think about it. There are bound to be innumerable knights back in your territory, you can just choose twelve from there.”
n“But what about the criteria to choose–”
n“It’d depend on their qualifications, but I’m pretty sure your knights would clear them.”
n“In that case, I’ll immediatel–”
n“No, there are many problems with handing out special treatment. In the first place, the twelve knights Wallace was talking about were the enemies in that story.”
nI looked at Wallace, and he turned away from me.
nApparently, it was the truth.
nHowever, I didn’t hate such things.
nIt takes guts to join the path of evil.
nFor serious-based evil lords like Kurt, it’s only natural he’d see it as inefficient– despite all the flair, weren’t they just a gathering of villains?
nThey’d be like the four heavenly kings to a demon lord. It was that kind of feeling.
nI wanted that kind of knight order.
nRecently, I couldn’t help but feel like I haven’t been active as an evil lord lately.
nWell, I was stuck in elementary school, so it couldn’t be helped.
n“A round table of twelve knights…”
nWallace raised his head at my mutters,
n“Liam, I’m going to be the one to establish the Knights of the Round Table, so don’t steal my idea!”
nWallace was saying something immature, but I couldn’t care less.
nI guess even he came up with good ideas every once in a while.
nAs I thought so, Kurt looked at us in amazement,
n“Liam is being corrupted by Wallace.”
nWallace turned to Kurt,
n“Hey… don’t you treat me a bit too harshly?”
nAs us three men continued our conversation, Rosetta approached us while waving her hand.
n“Darling! There you are!”
nWatching the heroine running over with a smile, I fell into thought.
nA beaming smile.
nFluttering hair slightly curled into ringlets.
nA swaying chest.
nHer cute way of running… there was nothing about Rosetta that’d make you think I used to call her a woman of steel.
n“…how did this happen?”
n“Darling, what happened?! Is there something wrong?! Are you not feeling well?! Let’s immediately go to the infirmar–”
n“No, it’s nothing.”
nRosetta seemed to be genuinely worried about me.
nIf this was all a ruse and she was just trying to trick me– then I might still be able to have some fun with this.
nHowever, it didn’t seem that way at all.
nWhere did the Rosetta with the spirit of steel disappear to?
n“…just how did this happen?”
n
