Chapter 621

Their turn came when the nurse called Lu Xinyi’s name to enter. For Shen Yi, he was thankful that they were already at the doctor’s door so he wouldn’t have to argue to Lu Xinyi that nothing was wrong with her and her doctor would reaffirm his claims professionally.

For him, there was nothing wrong with her figure. It was all just in her head. Why wouldn’t she listen to him?

The appointment with the doctor took over an hour before the couple left the room in shock and astonishment on their faces.

“Twenty thousand on a boy!” Shen Xue exclaimed.

Every pair of eyes in the Shen Yi’s living room turned to him. His name and the amount he mentioned jotted down on a ledger by Zhao Xi.

“That’s twenty thousand you’ll easily lose later.” Kang Wei snorted. “Why did you bet on a boy anyway?”

“That’s a no-brainer, Kang Wei. The Shen family produced more sons than daughters. It is rare for a Shen to bear a daughter. Of course, Yuyan’s case is special because she got a twin brother with her,” Shen Xue said in a matter of fact tone.

Zhao Xi hummed and nodded.

“Shen Xue has a point. If we’re talking about biology, the father determines the sex of the baby while the intelligence of the child is inherited from the mother.” -.

“Oh? No wonder Brother and I are smart. We must have gotten it from Mom,” Shen Xue said smugly, not noticing the rolled newspaper coming to hit his head. “Oww, Dad! That hurts!”

“I thought you forgot I was sitting next to you, huh?” Shen Huang glared at his youngest son.

“I was just joking, Dad!” Shen Xue rubbed the sore spot on his head hit by his father. “Mom, tell him!”

Zhang Jingwei let out a laugh and thanked a servant for her tea.

“Scientists estimate that only forty to sixty percent is hereditary when it comes to intelligence, Xue. Other environmental factors also play a role,” she explained.

“Higher chance on having a boy, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have a girl,” Xiao Lan said, cradling her son on her lap, “I’ll bet on a girl.”

Shen Huang nodded. Everyone could tell that he was one proud waiting grandpa at the moment. He couldn’t wait to see his grandchild in a few months. He’d been waiting for his turn for years to become a grandfather since most of his colleagues bragged to him about their cute and adorable grandchildren.

However, his hopes easily went down the drain as he watched both of his sons not planning to marry anytime soon. That was why when he first found out about the marriage of his eldest son to Lu Xinyi, he was over the moon!

Shen Huang could almost see it. Once his daughter-in-law gave birth, it was his time to shine!

Ha! Just wait and see… this proud grandpa would let everyone see that his precious grandchild would be the most adorable child they’d ever see!

“I agree with Xiao Lan. It’s time for the Shen family to have a daughter this time.”

“I’m sticking with the facts,” Shen Xue was confident with his bet. “It’s gonna be a boy.”

“I’ll bet it’s a girl for fifty thousand.” Tang Lilou joined the fun. “Xin Jie is also a Tang, and the Tang is known for their fair beauties.” She winked at her brother.

“Mommy will have a baby girl,” Little Yuyan insisted.

“Yes, and there goes another crying baby to disturb the house,” Shen Zichen muttered to himself.

The Shen and the Tang families, as well as the close friends of the couple, celebrated when they heard about Lu Xinyi’s pregnancy. None of them had expected that she’d bear a child soon. Weeks had passed, and she started looking bigger than the last time they saw her.

Since the time they found out about her pregnancy, the Shens and the Tangs took their turns to look after Lu Xinyi, doting on her to no end. They were excited as her pregnancy progressed, liking to touch her growing bump whenever she allowed them to.

“We’re home,” Lu Xinyi’s tired voice could be heard from the front door. The entire group turned to look at the approaching figure of the married couple.

Lu Xinyi’s hands rested on her growing belly to support herself. The child she was carrying was still considered not too large for her petite body, though it was obvious to everyone around her that she was pregnant.

“How was it?” Tang Lingfei asked as Shen Yi helped his wife to sit on the couch.

“It’s alright,” Lu Xinyi replied before noticing that their living room was invaded by their families. “Why’s everyone early today? There are still a couple of hours before the baby shower starts.”

She looked around and sighed in relief that the living room of their mansion was enough to house the number of guests they had at the moment. Even her cousin, Lu Xiulan, her best friend Yuan Jin, and business partner Xia Yuhan arrived to join the fun.

“So, what are you having?” She Xue asked excitedly. He rubbed both of his hands together, expecting to win the bet on the baby’s gender.

“What?” Lu Xinyi furrowed her brows, not understanding what her brother-in-law wanted.

“I mean the baby. What are you having? Is it a boy or a girl?” He cleared out her confusion.

“Oh…”

“Why do you want to know? Please don’t tell me y’all started a bet for this?” Shen Yi groaned as he sat next to his wife, his arm circling around her shoulder.

“You all made bets?” Lu Xinyi asked Shen Xue incredulously.

“They sure did,” Her mother-in-law laughed. “It’s a Shen thing. They love doing harmless bets so don’t worry.”

“So? Am I expecting to see a nephew or a niece? Quick, Big Sis. Tell us what you’re having?” Shen Xue demanded.

Lu Xinyi laughed and glanced at her husband.

“Well… those who bet for a girl surely won.”

The room was instantly filled with cheers and clapping except Shen Xue. He was staring at his elder brother in disbelief.

“You’re having a girl? What happened to the genes of the Shen family?” He sat back on the couch and sighed.

“Xue, accept your loss and be happy for your brother. You have to promise to love your niece once she arrives.” Matriarch Shen reminded him much to his irritation.

“Oh, so you bet for a boy?” Shen Yi raised a brow at his little brother.

Shen Xue huffed and crossed his arms. “You have disappointed me, Brother.”

Kang Wei appeared behind him and gave his shoulder a pat. “Haha, Xue. I told you. You’ll lose that twenty thousand easily.”

“Shut up, Kang Wei,” Shen Xue groaned to his friend while Kang Wei burst into a fit of laughter.

“Will you two stop bickering?” Zhang Jingwei demanded, standing from her chair to walk over Lu Xinyi. “Congratulations, honey.” She kissed Lu Xinyi’s head before greeting her own son.

“Congratulations! You’re having a girl!” Zhao Xi raised her wine glass and cheered at the couple.

The rest of the day was spent on Lu Xinyi’s baby shower. Their family and friends gave gifts that were filled with blue and pink colors as they didn’t know yet what they were having until now.

Shen Huang stood beside his eldest son as they watched everyone celebrate.

“How are you, son?”

“Tired, but it’s all worth it. I’m happy.” Shen Yi admitted to his father.
